In celebration of Heritage Month, Belfast Coal invited the Pioneers to partake in a one-day traditional cuisine cook-off challenge. The Pioneers did not disappoint—swaggering into the Belfast Coal offices adorned in vibrant heritage fabrics and traditional accessories that reflected the rich diversity of South Africa’s cultural tapestry.

With no time to waste, teams eagerly made final preparations, anticipating the arrival of departmental judges who would sample their traditional dishes in pursuit of the ultimate cook-off winner’s prize.

The atmosphere? Imagine rich, bold, aromatic flavours wafting through the air, mingling with echoes of clan praise recitations and jubilant ululations in the corridors—a sensory celebration of heritage! It was a match made in the Nkosi Sikelela republic.

The Connected Dome was electrified as the final ceremony commenced. Pioneers danced their way in, brimming with excitement for the cultural entertainment lined up—and of course, the moment of truth: the announcement of the department with the winning dish.

But the celebration didn’t end there. The day’s highlight was still up for debate: was it the soul-stirring poem by Loveness Nkuna, the theatrical musical play performed by the Peer Influencers’ drama team, or the Sustainability Team’s triumphant culinary victory? One thing’s for sure—Heritage Day 2025 at Belfast Coal was a vibrant, unforgettable celebration of culture, creativity, and sense of community.
