We are proud to announce the successful completion and handover of rehabilitated internal roads and stormwater management systems to the Emakhazeni Local Municipality near our Belfast Coal Mine in Mpumalanga, a milestone that reflects our commitment to creating meaningful, lasting impact in our host communities.

This achievement marks the continuation of our multi-phase Road Rehabilitation Project, following the successful completion of Phase 1 in 2023. Phase 2, which focused on Duggen and Macdonald Streets, brings our total investment to R26 million, reinforcing our dedication to strengthening local infrastructure, advancing service delivery, and ensuring safer, more accessible movement for residents and road users.

The project included upgraded stormwater drainage systems, new pedestrian sidewalks, parking bays, road signage, and surface improvements. These enhancements are not only improving everyday mobility but are also supporting regional connectivity particularly along the R540 route that links Belfast, Dullstroom, and Lydenburg, an area experiencing growing tourism and economic activity.

At the heart of this initiative is our commitment to inclusive growth. By intentionally appointing local subcontractors and empowering SMMEs, we ensured that the project created jobs, transferred critical skills, and stimulated the local economy. Community members gained hands-on experience in construction disciplines such as stormwater pipe laying, paving, quality control, and safety compliance, capabilities that contribute to long-term employability.

Reflecting on the handover, Belfast Coal’s Acting General Manager, Sizwe Moruku, “Infrastructural development remains a cornerstone of economic growth and improved quality of life. Through this project, we are not only improving local roads but also enabling communities to access opportunities that support long-term empowerment and sustainability.”

At Exxaro, we remain driven by our purpose: Powering better lives in Africa and beyond. With every road we rehabilitate and every skill we help strengthen, we move closer to building resilient, thriving communities that can seize new possibilities.
