Belfast Coal has been recognised at MineSafe Conference & Industry Awards 2025 with Best Improved Safety Performance on 21 November 2025. The South African Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (SAIMM) MineSafe held the Conference and  Industry Awards at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg.

Among the honoured participants, Belfast Coal stood out, clinching the first-place in the category. This accolade celebrates the unwavering commitment to safety demonstrated by every Pioneer on site, under the steadfast leadership of Musa Mabasa and Sizwe Moroku.

The recognition underscores how collective vigilance, proactive initiatives, and a shared culture of care translate into measurable results. It is evidence that Pioneers are committed to returning home at the end of each shift, the same way they arrived, safely with zero injuries.

Every shift, every decision, every pause for safety has built the culture behind this award,” the leadership team remarked, emphasising that the honour belongs to each Pioneer on the mine.

The win reinforces Belfast Coal’s role in driving the industry mantra: Safe Mines, Healthy Lives, and Sustainable Futures. It also resonates with the broader call to action – #KhethaUkuphepha (Choose Safety), echoing the unity and purpose across Exxaro Resources.

MineSafe is a conference hosted and facilitated by the South African Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (SAIMM) and aims to unite the mining sector and foster a shared commitment to creating a safe working environment, reducing harm, improving workplace conditions, and embedding a culture of safety across South Africa’s mining operations. It is a highly esteemed gathering of professionals across different mining companies and an excellent collaborative space where ideas and best practices can be shared and implemented.

This achievement demonstrates that Belfast Coal is committed to setting a benchmark for safety excellence in South Africa’s mining sector.
