This is the last edition of our newsletter, Umthombo for 2025. What a year it has been! Being trusted to steer the Belfast ship is a great honour and a vote of trust in me. I am grateful to each of you for the incredible support you have given me; it encourages me every single day. Thank you.
Since the beginning of the year, we have been navigating and operating Belfast Coal against pretty challenging market conditions. What I can say is that our Pioneering Spirit has been our compass because if has helped us to show resilience, innovation, and determination.
When I look back at the beginning of this year, we were steadfast in making our safety the cornerstone of how we operate, and I would like to say thank you to each Pioneer for being their brother’s keeper and making sure that we go back after each shift unharmed. Zero harm is one of the pillars of this company because, without people, we would not have a business.
The markets had strong headwinds this year; there was price pressure on an international scale, with low prices and weak demand pressure impacting on us as well. On the local front, the electricity sector continues to drive coal demand, and this avenue alleviates some of the challenges we faced.
The macro and micro market environment compelled us to think differently about how we approached and executed on our mandate. We encouraged Pioneers to be innovative in their roles, and I must say, Pioneers excel when they are challenged. Our “never give up” and Pioneering Spirit is what makes it exciting to come here every morning, knowing that all of us are steering the Belfast ship together, in the right direction.
While international headwinds threatened to cause instability and to create a negative impact on our bottom line, we realised that we needed to adjust certain areas, in terms of cost containment initiatives, to make sure that the business remains financially healthy.
It was not all doom and gloom. We hit many extremely positive milestones and had celebratory moments along the way. Being awarded at the SAIMM CoalSafe Awards for Best Improved Safety Performance is testament to this. Congratulations to each of you, Pioneers, this is all your hard work!
We have also delivered on our promise to our host communities; we executed several projects and Corporate Social Respiratory (CSR) initiatives. We are proud to have concluded and handed over the Duggen Road Project to the greater Emakhazeni Local Municipality. It is heartwarming to see projects that make a lasting, positive impact in the lives of others come to life. This is what makes it all worth it.
Lastly, we really executed and delivered excellently on our day-to-day imperatives, and there were many highlights from each department. While you may not be able to see the impact you made each day, look back at the year we have had and how much we have done. Well done to you all!
Thank you for your commitment, resilience, and determination to make Belfast Coal a beacon of excellence.
