In the true Pioneering culture of Belfast Mine, our people continue to show up and show off in demonstrating their innovative spirit. In October, Talia Ndlovu and Jabulile Sibeko came up tops at the 2025 PIT Symposium, taking 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. The Symposium is a contest amongst all Exxaro Professionals In Training (PIT), who present innovative ideas they have come up with from their respective operations.
Each PIT that presents at the Symposium has to be able to demonstrate innovation or improvement in their department or operation. It can be an improvement of innovation in process, operations, highlighting ways to enhance equipment operations while upholding or improving quality control principles.
Their presentations, supported by slides and videos, are presented alongside industry leaders, innovators, and subject matter experts. The symposium is a great platform to show analytical thinking, creative thinking, and technological astuteness in a subject matter. This is reflective of the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.
Talia and Jabulile’s journey, together with other Pioneer PITs, started on 12 August at The Connected Dome. Pioneers presented in front of Musa and the Heads of Departments. The session acknowledged the Pioneers’ outstanding work, commitment to safety, excellence, and teamwork. The top three participants were chosen to participate in the next round, with other employees from across Exxaro.
We are proud of Talia and Jabulile for their exceptional achievement, and we hope that they will not stop innovating and that they will inspire others to follow in their steps.
Belfast Coal, a digitally connected mine, is also a home of innovation and continuous learning, clearly showing that Exxaro puts emphasis on being a learning organisation.
What is a learning organisation?
A learning organisation is a company that is committed to continually learning in order to adapt to changes in the environment and grow from what they adapt to. Such a company often encourages employee learning and developing a culture of innovation and shared vision. It is based on the idea that companies that learn through the process of developing and sharing knowledge are better positioned for long-term success. They succeed by focusing on collective and individual growth rather than just following formal rules. Employees are encouraged to test the suitability of the status quo and come up with ways to improve what does not work. Important to note is that safety is never compromised in the process.
